Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Has Been Compared to The Empire Strikes Back

Sony Pictures Entertainment

The sequel, which will sit in the middle of the Spider-Verse trilogy, has been compared several times to one of the most iconic follow-ups of all time – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Not only have the comparisons been made regarding the tone of both sequels, co-director Kemp Powers has since revealed that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will also end on a gloomy cliffhanger. “Across The Spider-Verse is a movie on its own, but it definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger,” Powers revealed. “I think it’s a good cliffhanger. We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film, because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next.”

One person who is satisfied is fellow director Joaquim Dos Santos who adds, “I was very satisfied after The Empire Strikes Back. And hopefully, this is our Empire.”

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales aka Spider-Man, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker aka Spider-Man, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar aka Spider-Man India, Andy Samberg as Ben Reilly aka Scarlet Spider, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Jason Schwartzman as Jonathan Ohnn aka The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release in the United States on June 2, 2023, with the third outing, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
