Carnival cruise crew had to evacuate rooms after flooding in stormy weather | Cruise | Travel

The Carnival Sunshine cruise ship was returning to the USA from a six night round trip to the Bahamas when it was hit by stormy weather.

A video taken onboard the ship showed significant flooding in crew areas of the vessel while some passengers reported leaking ceilings.

Crockery and glassware broke in some public areas of the ship and seasickness bags were distributed to guests.

Some crew members were evacuated to higher decks of the ship during the worst of the weather but no significant injuries were reported.

The ship was delayed for nine hours after it was unable to enter the Port of Charleston to embark new passengers.

A passenger who was onboard the ship told DailyMail.com that he was at a show and the sounds of the ship “crashing” into the swells could be heard over the music playing.

The passenger said that the ship’s internet went out at one point, leaving guests unable to check weather updates.

One passenger said the noises sounded as though the “ship split in two” at one point during the storm.

Waiting passengers were kept informed via text and all were able to board the ship by 11pm that night.

Due to the boarding delay, all the new passengers were reportedly offered a $100 (£81) credit note to spend on the cruise.

The ship continued on its schedule as planned with guests embarking on a five-night voyage to the Bahamas.

A spokesperson for Carnival told Express.co.uk: “Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday.

“The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival on Sunday and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests. Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on its next cruise.”
