It remains to be seen if Jonathan Majors will be booted from his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kang, but if a replacement is ultimately needed, many fans on Twitter think Chukwudi Iwuji is the perfect person for the job. This weekend, fans can see Iwuji on the big screen with his role as the High Evolutionary in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The actor has drawn some high praise for his performance as the dastardly supervillain, and that’s led to some growing calls on social media for Iwuji to be considered as Kang if the role gets recast. Better yet, it would be very easy to explain the change in appearance for Kang, as that’s one of the benefits of establishing the multiverse.
“I saw some people saying that they want Chukwudi Iwuji to replace Jonathan Majors as the MCU’s Kang if he gets [recast] considering how great he was in GOTG 3 so how would you feel about this? If this happened it could be explained that the High Evolutionary was a Kang variant,” as one fan puts it.
Another tweet, which has garnered more than 22,000 likes, simply reads: “If they do recast Kang in the future, I have a suggestion… Chukwudi Iwuji.”
“I cannot stress enough how absolutely perfect Chukwudi Iwuji is for this role,” says someone else, in awe over the actor’s performance in Guardians 3. “There hasn’t been as f**ked up a villain as the High Evolutionary in the MCU until him. If they have to recast Kang, use this as a stepping off, make High Evolutionary a variant. Incredible villain.”
The tweets go on and on, many expressing this same opinion. At this point, the support for Iwuji to potentially become the new Kang has gotten so much attention that it’s very likely to get the attention of the folks at Marvel Studios. Even if no efforts have yet been made to possibly recast Kang, it should be good to know that there’s already one actor they could potentially use that would be embraced by many Marvel fans with open arms.
Will Kang Ultimately Be Recast?
Majors has already shot his scenes for the second season of Loki and is expected to appear as Kang when that series returns this year. He is also planned to return in a major way for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is set to start filming in early 2024 for a 2025 release. It could be that the brass at Marvel Studios are waiting to see what happens with the criminal case against Majors before making any decisions concerning his spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A negative outcome for Majors in court could seal the deal on a recasting, but having things go his way could end up with Marvel committing to his return as Kang.
In any case, all we can do at this point is to wait and see. You can check out Iwuji’s acclaimed performance as the High Evolutionary by watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, now in theaters, and you can see some more of the fan reactions below.
