Frank Grillo Reveals Purge 6 Details, Says It’s ‘The Last of the Last’ in the Horror Franchise

Summary

  • Frank Grillo heaps praise on ‘
    The Purge 6
‘ script, calling it the final installment in the franchise.
  • Grillo’s character Leo Barnes will take a prominent role in the movie, set in a divided America.
  • Creator James DeMonaco will direct ‘
    The Purge 6
,’ and explore a broken, ideologically divided America.

The Purge: Anarchy star Frank Grillo has offered another positive update on the development of the horror sequel, The Purge 6, revealing to Screen Rant that the script is “done” and that it will be the final installment in the franchise. For real, this time. Grillo, who stars in The Purge series as Leo Barnes, heaped praise on The Purge 6 script, and just hopes that the studio is ready to commit to the project.

“The script is done. It basically centers around Leo Barnes, my character. It would be the last of the last of the last, it’s like the guy who keeps retiring. James DeMonaco is going to direct it, if it happens, and it’s a matter of money. It’s a matter of how big they want the movie to be, how much money they want to spend on the movie, considering they’ve done a lot in this franchise. But it’s a great script.”

Beginning back in 2013 with The Purge, the horror franchise has since spawned several sequels, with Grillo joining the fray in 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy. Starring as the vengeful Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, Leo Barnes, the character quickly became a fan-favorite, returning in 2016’s The Purge: Election Year.

The Purge franchise has grown a lot. But as entertaining as it can be, there’s a lot about the entire concept that doesn’t make any sense.

The Purge franchise has since continued without Grillo, in both the prequel outing The First Purge and 2021’s sequel The Forever Purge, but bringing him back for the final installment would absolutely be the right move. If the studio is brave enough to do it, that is.

The Purge 6 Will Follow Frank Grillo as He Travels Across ‘A Broken America’

The Purge 6 has been written, and will be directed by, creator James DeMonaco, who has previously revealed the situation that Grillo’s Leo Barnes will find himself in. The filmmaker revealed last year that the sequel would take place in a version of America more broken than ever before, with the country now split up into states based on “ideology, sexuality and religion.”

“‘Purge 6’ is my way of looking at the country now. I grew up watching ‘Logan’s Run’ and ‘Soylent Green’ and John Carpenter and George Romero, whose sociopolitical messaging was within the films. They were smuggling ideas into the film. So for me for 6, I was extrapolating on the discord and taking it to its furthest, as far as you can take that idea of what’s going on, I feel, in the country and the political landscape. And it’s a broken America. We’re remapping. [‘The Purge 6’] is about the remapping of America based on ideology, sexuality and religion, so that the states are broken down. You have your Black state, you have your gay state, you have your white evangelical state. And it’s really a broken country.”

While we await the last Purge in The Purge 6, Frank Grillo has plenty in the pipeline. The actor recently joined forces with action star Scott Adkins for Lights Out, will star in an action movie that Grillo himself describes as “The Purge meets werewolves,” and is all set to join James Gunn’s DCU as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series, Creature Commandos.
