Latest UFC rankings update: Brandon Royval, Brian Ortega head north following Mexico City victories

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently updated its official rankings in the wake of the UFC Mexico City mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which took place last Sat. night (Feb. 27, 2024) at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico. That’s where Brandon Royval captured a split decision victory over former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno, a performance good enough to send “Raw Dog” to No. 1 at 125 pounds. In addition, longtime featherweight contender Brian Ortega jumped to No. 3 at 145 pounds by submitting Yair Rodriguez.

Here’s how UFC compiles its official rankings:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).

PIVOTAL FLYWEIGHT FRACAS! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico, on Feb. 24, 2024, with a pivotal Flyweight fracas between former 125-pound kingpin, Brandon Moreno, and most recent title challenger, Brandon Royval, who replaces the red-hot (and injured) Iraqi “Prince,” Amir Albazi. In UFC Mexico City’s ESPN+-streamed co-main event, top-ranked Featherweight contenders, Yair Rodriguez (No. 3) and Brian Ortega (No. 4), will run it back after their initial encounter ended prematurely via gross injury.

Don’t miss a single second of face-punching action!

You can expect these rankings to change around this time next week, particularly in the heavyweight division, following the UFC Vegas 87: “Rozenstruik vs. Gaziev” mixed martial arts (MMA) event on ESPN+, scheduled for this Sat. night (March 2, 2024) at the promotion’s APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.
