Snyder firmly believes that constructing his fantastical worlds using tangible elements enhances the sense of immersion. Rather than approaching Rebel Moon as a traditional space opera, he opted for a more intimate lens, aiming to ground the science fiction elements within a palpable reality. His intent was to provide viewers with an organic experience, one that seamlessly integrated the spaceships and peculiar planets into the fabric of their journey. In this approach, nothing was forcefully thrust upon the audience or explicitly spoon-fed; instead, every encounter was carefully crafted to ensure a natural, immersive encounter with the otherworldly aspects of the film’s universe.

“I’m a glutton for punishment. I don’t know why I always make an ensemble movie. I can’t wait to not do that. But in the meantime, of course…I love it. This movie was me going, ‘Of course it’s a space opera, but let’s not lens it that way. Let’s lens it in a more intimate way, so that the sci-fi elements feel more grounded.’ We’re not always saying, ‘Look at how big our spaceships are or how weird our planets look!’ That happens, but it happens as an organic part of the world you’re in. You’re there, and so the things you see on that journey are not forced upon you or spoon-fed to you,” Snyder said.

Ori Marmur, a producer at Netflix who collaborated with Zack Snyder on the Army of the Dead franchise, recognized the immense scope of Snyder’s universe in Rebel Moon. Acknowledging the depth and intricacy of the world that Snyder had conceived, Marmur made the decision to divide the film into two parts. This creative choice was intended to provide Snyder with the opportunity to delve into the minute details of his expansive creation. By splitting the story, Snyder could further explore the backgrounds, motivations, and journeys of the characters, allowing for a more immersive and comprehensive storytelling experience.

Rebel Moon Part One is set to premiere on Netflix on December 22.
