Ben Affleck has a new movie in development, and it can help redeem him years after a failed genre return. Affleck’s career has certainly had its highs and lows, with 2023 proving to be a pivotal moment. He returned to directing with Air after six years with great acclaim, but his DC role as Batman officially came to an end. While The Flash flopped at the box office, Air was a fairly big success and reunited him with Matt Damon. It also left audiences with greater interest in seeing what Affleck would do next.

The future of Ben Affleck’s career has become a bit more clear following the revelation that he has already lined up his next directing gig. Despite momentum gaining for The Accountant 2 moving forward, Affleck has instead agreed to direct Animals for Netflix next. The movie will once again see Affleck direct Matt Damon in a starring role, as he plays a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped. Knowing that another Affleck and Damon movie is on the way is undoubtedly exciting, but it should also be a moment of redemption for Ben Affleck following a previous failure.

Ben Affleck’s New Movie Animals Is Another Return To Crime Thrillers

Ben Affleck has directed many different types of movies in his career, but crime thrillers have become his most common genre. The Town was his first foray into the crime thriller genre, and the 2010 movie was incredibly well-received. It took Affleck another six years to plot his return to this style of moviemaking with Live By Night in 2016. The idea of him returning to a movie similar to The Town made Live By Night highly anticipated, but the movie ultimately did not land. Its 35% Rotten Tomatoes score is the worst for a movie Ben Affleck directed.

Animals now gives Affleck a chance to return to the crime thriller genre and redeem himself after Live By Night. There is no doubt that he is an incredibly talented director, with Live By Night being his only “Rotten” movie in five attempts. All his other movies have been critically acclaimed, with Argo even winning Best Picture. Live By Night is the one misfire that he’s had, with The Town being a more accurate representation of what Affleck can do in the crime thriller genre. Instead of steering clear of the genre after 2016’s failure, Animals can be his redemption.

Air’s Success Means Animals Won’t Be Another Crime Thriller Bomb For Ben Affleck

The good news is that all signs point to Animals being a success and avoiding the problems of Live By Night. Affleck took a break from directing after the critical lambasting that the 2016 movie received and waited until it was time to make Air to return. The 2023 movie was the perfect reset for him, providing a more light-hearted story and reconnecting him with Matt Damon. The fact that they have quickly found Animals to be the next project they want to work on together should speak volumes about their faith that the crime thriller will be another hit.
