8 Things To Remember From All Of Us Are Dead 2 Years After It Premiered

Summary

  • Dr. Lee created the zombie virus due to his son’s bullying.
  • The military bombed Hyosan to contain the outbreak in the end.
  • Nam-ra has learned to control her halfbie powers and lives with others like her.

All of Us Are Dead was released more than two years ago, and there are a few important things to remember from season 1 before season 2 eventually premiers. While the series was renewed shortly after its debut on Netflix, it is still unclear when All of Us Are Dead season 2 will be released. Praised as one of the best Korean zombie shows and one of the best K-dramas on Netflix, All of Us Are Dead has built a lot of anticipation for the new season despite the lack of updates.

The first season of All of Us Are Dead had 12 episodes and took place within no more than a couple of days. The series followed a zombie outbreak in Hyosan, starting from patient zero to the full collapse of the country. Between the amount of All of Us Are Dead characters and the unique zombie concepts introduced on the show, some key events from the series must not be forgotten and will likely play an important role in the upcoming season 2.

8 Dr. Lee Byeong-chan Created The Zombie Virus

The zombie outbreak began in Hyosan High

All of Us Are Dead’s zombie virus, also known as the Jonas virus, was created by Dr. Lee Byeong-chan to respond to the bullying his son suffered. Dr. Lee believed that those who were being wronged by other people should be able to turn their anger into strength, leading to the creation of a virus that enhances a person’s rage. However, the formula was far more powerful than Byeong-chan could have predicted, making his son patient zero of the zombie apocalypse. That said, the outbreak only properly began at the Hyosan high school with Kim Hyeon-ju.

7 All Of Us Are Dead Introduced The Concept Of Halfbies

Halfbies (or hambies) are half-human, half-zombies

All of Us Are Dead’s halfbies, or hambies, are undead people who have the zombie virus but did not fully transform into a zombie. These people retain their consciousnesses and personality but have the same needs as any other zombies, meaning they are a threat to everyone around them. Multiple All of Us Are Dead characters turned into halfbies during season 1, including but not limited to Gwi-nam, Nam-ra, Eun-ji, and possibly Cheong-san. Halfbies are expected to play an even bigger role in season 2 considering how the first season ended.

All Of Us Are Dead Season 2’s Story Can Easily Copy Season 1 (But It Shouldn’t)

One detail from All of Us Are Dead’s finale proves that season 2 could easily replicate season 1’s premise, which doesn’t mean it shouldn’t.

6 The Military Has Bombarded Hyosan In All Of Us Are Dead

Most of the city was destroyed at the end of season 1

An explosion happens behind the All of Us Are Dead characters

To prevent the zombie outbreak from spreading to other regions, the military decided to bombard Hyosan at the end of All of Us Are Dead. While thousands of zombies were killed, countless innocent people were also caught in the explosions. Hyosan High, where most of All of Us Are Dead took place, was also destroyed. Whether the military succeeded in limiting the outbreak to Hyosan remains to be seen. At the end of the Now At Your School webtoon, the zombie virus makes its way into Japan, which is something season 2 could explore.

5 On-jo’s Father Died So That His Daughter Could Live

So-ju was one of many deaths in All of Us Are Dead

So-ju, On-jo’s father in All of Us Are Dead, died so that his daughter and her friends could escape the zombies and run away from the school. On-jo’s dad spent most of the show trying to reach the school and save his daughter, which he eventually did. So-ju was one of several characters who died in All of Us Are Dead, a list that also includes Cheong-san’s mom, Cheong-san himself, and multiple students from Hyosan High. Even the ones who turned into zombies were also killed at the end by the bombs.

4 Cheong-san Died Fighting Gwi-nam In All Of US Are Dead

It’s unclear whether Cheong-san will return

The most tragic of all the All of Us Are Dead deaths was that of Cheong-san, who got caught in the explosion after falling from a building during his fight with Gwi-nam. Cheong-san was bitten in the arm by Gwi-nam and decided to stay behind to fight the villain while On-jo and the rest of the group escaped. Ready to sacrifice himself for his friends, Cheong-san made sure he and Gwi-nam would die together. While their bodies were never shown, it’s difficult to imagine how someone could have survived that fall and the bombarding.

Nam-ra was turned into a halfbie by Gwi-nam at the beginning of the series and struggled to control her zombie abilities.

That said, considering that Cheong-san may have turned into a halfbie just before his “death,” it is possible he is still alive. Yoon Chan-young, who plays Cheong-san in All of Us Are Dead, was one of the actors featured in the season 2 announced video shared by Netflix. Additionally, if Gwi-nam was able to survive multiple deadly situations, the same could apply to Cheong-san. The problem, however, is that if Cheong-san is alive, then Gwi-nam is most likely not dead either. What really happened to those two is one of All of Us Are Dead’s biggest unanswered questions.

3 Nam-ra Can Now Control Her Powers In All Of Us Are Dead

Nam-ra is in control of her halfbie abilities

Nam-ra was turned into a halfbie by Gwi-nam at the beginning of the series and struggled to control her zombie abilities. On one hand, Nam-ra’s powers helped save her friends multiple times, especially against Gwi-nam. On the other hand, Nam-ra became a threat to her friends and almost killed On-jo at the end of the season. Fortunately, after separating herself from the group and spending months living out in the open, Nam-ra learned how to control her transformation. She no longer has the red mark around her eye, suggesting Nam-ra is now fully in control.

2 Nam-ra Is Living With Other Halfbies Out In The Open

The halfbies are being targeted by the military

Another important thing to remember about Nam-ra going into All of Us Are Dead season 2 is that she is now living with other halfbies out in the open. According to Nam-ra, there are many people like her living in the wreckages of Hyosan. However, these halfbies are being hunted down by the military, which makes no distinction between regular zombies and this special class of undead people. Presumably, Nam-ra’s halfbie friends are the ones who helped her understand and control her transformation. All of Us Are Dead season 1 even ended with Nam-ra showing off her powers.

All of Us Are Dead season 2 may be about On-jo, Su-hyeok, and the rest of the group helping Nam-ra protect the other halfbies. This would make the military the villains of season 2, which would make a lot of sense considering how angry the kids were at the soldiers at the end of the season. The concept of halfbies is what set All of Us Are Dead apart from other zombie K-dramas, and it will be interesting to see how season 2 expands on it. Nam-ra could now be the “class president” of the halfbies.

1 All Of Us Are Dead’s Characters Are Living In A Quarantine Zone

All of Us Are Dead’s school is no more

Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead cleverly avoided using the webtoon’s name for the adaptation, as Now At Our School would limit the scope of the story. Hyosan High was destroyed, and the characters are now living in a quarantine zone set up by what was left of the military. Considering how much of All of Us Are Dead, including posters and other promotional material, was tied to the school, the show now has the chance to reinvent itself with a new setting in season 2. Aside from Nam-ra, all surviving characters are living together in this quarantined settlement.
