Mark & Amber’s Inevitable Breakup Means Invincible Must Change One Part Of Their Comic Story

Summary

  • Mark and Amber’s relationship in Invincible is headed for a breakup, mirroring the comics’ storyline.
  • Season 2, episode 5 highlights the cracks in Mark and Amber’s relationship, pointing towards an inevitable split.
  • The show may deviate from the comics by potentially changing the uncomfortable Gary storyline and breakup reasons.

Mark and Amber’s breakup is inevitable in Invincible season 2, and this means that the TV adaptation must change one part of the couple’s comic story. Mark Grayson’s relationship with Amber has been one of the storylines at the core of seasons 1 and 2 of Invincible, with Amber being one of the few humans that keeps Mark grounded and acts as a support system throughout the trials and tribulations of the show. However, Mark and Amber’s relationship won’t last forever if Invincible season 2 sticks to the comics, but the show will have to make one big change.

Invincible season 2, part 2 is finally here, with Amazon Prime Video finally releasing the highly anticipated continuation of the critically acclaimed animated adaptation of the superhero comic of the same name. Invincible season 2, part 2 picks up right where Invincible season 2, part 1 ended, with Mark returning home from Thraxa after several months while the Guardians of the Globe prepare to head to space and prevent a Sequid invasion. Invincible season 2, episode 5 makes sure to provide an update on Mark and Amber’s relationship, but fans of the comics know that it isn’t a good one.

Invincible Season 2, Episode 5 Paves The Way For Mark & Amber’s Breakup

Mark and Amber are finally reunited in Invincible season 2, episode 5, with the episode paving the way for their inevitable breakup. After returning home from Thraxa, Mark makes a surprise visit to Amber’s dorm, with the two reuniting after being apart for so long. Things immediately start to get awkward for the couple, with Mark and Amber having to lie about where Mark has been. This is because Amber has several friends over, with these friends pointing out that they didn’t believe that Mark actually existed.

Invincible Season 3: Cast, Story, & Everything We Know

The Amazon Prime Video series Invincible shined during its first two seasons, and here’s everything we know about the upcoming season 3.

Mark then learns that he missed the death of Amber’s grandfather, with this piling on top of the college struggles that Mark hasn’t been there to support Amber during. Amber then talks about the struggles that the couple has to face due to Mark being a superhero, and while they still love each other, this conversation seems to be the beginning of the end of their relationship. Invincible season 2, episode 5 makes it clear that this relationship isn’t sustainable, meaning that Mark and Amber will have to break up eventually.

What Happens To Mark & Amber In The Invincible Comics

Mark and Amber don’t last long past the comics that the Invincible show is adapting, with the couple eventually breaking up. Upon returning to Earth, Mark learns that Amber has been regularly hanging out with a guy named Gary. Although Amber isn’t cheating on Mark, the amount of time that they spend together makes Mark jealous. The fights over Gary and their personal struggles eventually lead to Mark and Amber breaking up, with Amber having developed feelings for Gary. Amber leaves Mark to be with Gary, but this is kind of a relief for Mark.

During Amber’s time developing feelings for Gary, Mark actually developed feelings for Eve, with him trying to decide how to end things with Amber so he can get together with his fellow superhero. Mark then begins dating Eve not long after ending things with Amber, and this new relationship goes much more smoothly due to both of them being superheroes. Although Amber is a less significant character in the Invincible comics after their breakup, she still appears every once in a while, with the Gary storyline making a return a few issues later.

Amazon’s Invincible Must Change Amber’s “Gary” Storyline

Although the show is fairly accurate to the source material, Invincible has made a few comic book changes, and the Gary storyline is one that needs to be changed. Not long after their breakup, Amber contacts Mark, with Mark discovering that Gary has been physically abusive to her. Mark then threatens Gary’s life, with Amber deciding to give Gary another chance. This sensitive subject doesn’t have a lot of bearing on the overall story of Invincible, and Amber giving Gary another chance, despite being assaulted by him, is a decision that would require way more narrative depth and exploration than the Amazon series may have space for.

Luckily, it already seems like Invincible may be changing the Gary storyline. According to the Invincible comics, Gary should be around by now, but the Amazon series hasn’t introduced him yet. This could mean that the TV show is planning on changing Amber and Mark’s reasons for breaking up, with Invincible potentially moving away from the uncomfortable Gary arc.
